Pickleball: The Fast-Paced Sport Sweeping across America

Have you heard of Pickleball? This fast-paced sport is taking the US by storm, attracting players of all ages and abilities. It's a unique combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.

Origins of Pickleball

The game was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and his friends Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. They were looking for a way to keep their families entertained during summer weekends, so they came up with a game that could be played on their badminton court with paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

The game was initially called "pickleball" because Pritchard's wife Joan thought the paddles and ball reminded her of a pickle boat, a term used in crew races. However, the name "pickleball" has nothing to do with pickles or cucumbers.

Rules of the Game

Pickleball is played on a court that measures 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, which is about a quarter of the size of a tennis court. The net is hung at 36 inches in height at the sidelines and 34 inches in the center. The game can be played in singles or doubles, with 2-4 payers using paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over the net.

The serve must be made from behind the baseline and underhand, with the paddle contacting the ball below the waist. The ball must clear the net and land within the opponent's service court. The receiving team lets the ball bounce once on their side before returning it, and then the serving team should also let it bounce once before returning it.

After the two bounces, the ball can be volleyed (hit in the air without letting it bounce) or played off the bounce. The point is awarded to the team that wins the rally, and the first team to reach 11 points (with a two-point advantage) wins the game.
